Caption : | Most of the ice that makes up a glacier is rock-free because it forms in open snowfields and slopes high in the mountains. But as the ice moves down-valley, rocks avalanche onto the glacier surface where ice and land meet. Rock is also picked up beneath the surface of the glacier wherever the ice is in contact with the land. |
