The new and even bigger boat: Wonder of the Seas

The boat this year was ever so slightly bigger than last year, although it looked quite similar in size and where things where, but it came wit ha few bonuses. It was a the biggest ship in the world when it was launched a few years ago, but now it's the 3rd biggest (although the biggest one is really just 10ft longer).

I signed up for the flowrider on the first day, did ok standing but it still didn't feel natural compared to snowboarding. I forgot to give my phone, so therefore it never happened and you can watch better people:

After I managed to hurt my back and my neck there, which is very easy to do, the boat left Miami around sunset:

Many swimming pools and definitely more cool things on the deck than last year's Alure of the Seas (which I'm told has been remodelled since then), including water slides and the abyss ride from floor 16 down to 6:

unfortunately waterslides were not open when I tried to go

looked cool, though

The rest of the boat was equally nice:

Nice art gallery:

The dual abyss slide was cool looking:

reality is that it was mostly dark

And because the GC crew is really a bunch of overachievers, they even setup side quests with riddles where you could unlock secret doors and get stamps for bragging rights:

Boat staff/policies/security

This is mostly a repeat of what I wrote last year, the only difference is given how long it took them to scan and deliver one of the pieces of luggage last year, I hand carried everything this time around, which wasn't a huge pain and was much easier in the end.
Carribean's rules were of course geared towards the normal cruises they had the rest of the year, but ultimately they worked well for GC too, and they were pretty lenient with the many things people brought it for the party. Department of immigration somehow brought sniffing dogs to do their own scan of people getting in, but outside of that, the rules were mostly reasonable:
  • they did allow one bottle of alcohol per person
  • no issues with costumes or led gear for people like me
  • there was a restriction on bringing your own power strips, my small one in my laptop bag was allowed
  • last year, we spent 2.5h in line to get on the boat which was quite poor. This year was a lot more efficient and we were in, in less than 1H. Much better.
  • I felt the restaurants had better hours to be compatible with the party crowd, that was a nice improvement.
  • The boat staff was of course amused by all the craziness GC brought to their boat. They were great sports dealing with all the craziness and did the best to accommodate us. Like I wrote last year, I'm sure we made their 5 days interesting, but they did the best to please anytime they could (polar opposite of Creamfields and Lumi where the customer was almost an enemy in multiple places).
  • Like last year, instead of having to worry about thefts like some festivals, people were happy to get their lost items brought back. Awesome!
  • This is a good time to point out that the Groovecruise team did an amazing job decking out the place and turning a cruiseship into a small city with nightclubs and festival areas. They really went all out, all the way to confetti that had to be cleaned carefully afterwards and even balloon drops. Multiple stages had lasers and cool lighting and overall the sound was good. Given the location and that it had to be installed and torn down in record time because the ship was used for regular cruises just before, and just after, was nothing short of amazing.
I also need to give the GC crew a shout out for really being chill trusting. This year, I added lasers to my outfit, which I researched carefully for power and safety with the help of specialized engineers to make sure they would not be a risk to others. I also did my best not to point them at people's faces for obvious reasons. While they looked super cool, a couple of GC technicians came to talk to me and ensured I knew not to point at people or DJ, and generally to make sure I knew not to be an idiot with them. After that, they told me to have a good night and have fun. The trust was very much appreciated.

    People

Ok, so I've been to many festivals (over 80 in 20+ years), and I like the costume aspect of those who encourage them, like most insomniac festivals in the US including EDC Vegas, Beyond Wonderland, and Dreamstate Socal. But I have to say that Groovecruise won as "best vibes and most costumes" by a good amount. I was positively impressed and it was loads of fun:

    towelie!

    Running into Friends:

Great to see DJ friends again:

    Groovecruise Days 1-2

Getting on the boat was a lot less painful this year, but the weather was shit on the arrive day (thursday), and the rain continued all day and night, which unfortunately messed up Darude's decks for his pool set, until he had to stop. Still it was great to see it until it shut down, and then we retreated indoors as trance must go on :)

Adam Scott continued at the promenade

The next day, we got another cool balloon drop during Markus Schulz's set:

    Day 3: Nassau, Bahamas

Nassau was very close, most of the time, the boat went up and down the coast, and on Day #3, dropped us off in Nassau

Last year, we spent an entire 2 days to get to Labadee, Haiti a mere 4H before the boat had to leave and boat 2 days back to Miami. This time, we had a full day in Nassau, which was a cool place to visit:

there was an outdoor stage and party, although I spent most of the day visiting Nassau

Day4 (Sunday), I took things easy, got some sleep and an easy day on sunday:

    Blastoyz by the pool

and then, make fun of me, I went to bed not nearly as late as the previous year, because of Day5:

Groovecruise Days 5: Rough Trip Back to Reality

I remembered how terrible monday morning was last year, so I didn't go party late sunday night, it wasn't worth the pain of being woken up and pushed off the boat a few hours after going to bed :) As a result, I wasn't as sleep deprived as the previous year, getting off the boat was less rough this time around and there was almost no line to get out, so it was pretty painless.

Should you go? Would I go Back?

First, I will point you to my thoughts and conclusions from last year, I won't repeat the same ones here

This is mostly what I wrote last year, as it still stands. While I don't have official numbers, it looks like the return rate for Groove Cruise is very high, and that's for good reason. I was impressed by how many things the crew did right, and things I was worried about were not much of an issue.

  • Fantastic job decorating the boat and decking out the stages, including side quests, even
  • internet package worked significantly better this year
  • Attendees were the best, and the most costumed I had ever seen anywhere
  • security was just what was needed, nothing more, never an issue, and I never felt like I had to "fight" to be there or be able to enjoy myself in a PLUR way.
  • 4 days go by quickly, I wouldn't have been upset with another day or two :)
  • there was a fair amount of stuff to do on the boat outside of partying
  • there was trance! I hate to have to say this, but too many festivals are dropping trance. Even untold which was a trance heaven for a festival of all EDM genres, severely reduced the amount of trance last year :-// Huge thanks to Adam Scott and all the DJs who did trance for us.
  • Is it worth flying across the world for? Yes. It's actually a long flight from SFO, and I didn't regret it. I think it's almost the same distance from Paris or London :)
  • Generally, the team really cares, they go above and beyond, and even after 20-ish years, they are still humble and always want to try their best and improve. This is huge, too many festivals rest or their laurels, or "it's just a job" and the experience is nowhere the same. This kind of culture is crucial for the best experiences, and only at insomniac festivals have I seen something similar.
  • Things to improve:

  • The GC android app was pretty poor though, it mostly didn't work to show you what should be your saved schedule and selected sets, if you were offline.
  • Some amount of the stages in the GC app were not mapped anywhere or visible in the Royal Carribean app. Maybe it was part of the game to have to find those stages, but if not, better info could be given.
  • The morning announcements while really lovely were also very painful if you happened to be sound asleep. Honestly a fair amount of people were upset to be woken up so early by then, and so loudly. There is literally no way to turn them off as they are (mis)-using the ship's emergency alert system. If there was only one wish I could have is to be able to turn them off or not have them. Having them be forced on everyone and ruining sleep is just not cool
  • The last thing I really hope GC can fix is allowing people to sell/transfer back their room to whet travel if there are people on the waiting list who really want one (for a small fee for their time and of course preventing any scalping and reselling over face value). They tell you to get insurance, but insurance that covers "change of plans" costs a lot and only covers 50% of what you paid, so that's not really a reasonable option.
  • And you're going to ask: Isn't it expensive?

So, yes, it's not cheap, around $1500 to $2000 per person, but it includes:
  • 4 days of music with up to 10 stages, mostly non stop
  • all the amenities of a cruise ship if they appeal to you
  • your room is 5-10mn away, you can go back and forth any time you want. This is priceless! I really need to emphasize how awesome that part is and how alone it's worth the bit of extra money.
  • included food in buffet and restaurant was more than decent and "for pay" restaurants were very good
  • Nassau excursion was nice and nice to have an entire day there
  • To me, this is not that much more than what I would spend at EDC with VIP tickets + hotel + food and I felt the experience was close enough to VIP like. The crowds were also more mature and more PLUR than the average festival, and that was a good thing to me. Ok, the stages are not to the level of a real EDC or Beyond Wonderland-like festival, but they were good enough for me to have lots of fun.
All in all, I was very satisfied and felt it was well worth the price. Clearly plenty of people seem to agree as more people are going every year and they keep having to migrate to a bigger ship (another bigger one even for next year and this year's was already one of the biggest on the market).

While groovecruise was not in the cards for me for a bunch of prior years due to conflicting events and priorities, I also regret not having gone sooner, it's a pretty awesome event. If you already have been, you know. If you have not, take my word for it, it is cool and unique (and has lots of styles of music, most I didn't have time to go see).

The Grounds... and how does it compare with EDCLV, EDCMX, and EDCKR?

security check was thorough, felt a bit over thorough

So far I have been to 10 EDCs in Vegas, EDC Mexico and EDC Korea. EDC Mexico was pretty good but the day hours were brutal (hot, plus high altitude thin air, and on top of that volcano ash in the air with a bad PM2.5 score, that made things hard). EDC Koreak, despite being in April, was literally the coldest festival I had ever been to, the windshield was brutal.
    But let's reacp:

  • EDCMX ran from 14:00 to 02:00, 3 days
  • EDCKR ran from 15:00 to 03:00, 2 days only
  • EDCTH ran from 15:00 to 00:00 only (shortest days), but 3 days
  • I realize it's subjective and my memory is imperfect, but EDCTH / Puket felt the most EDCLV of all 3 events as far as stages and decors were concerned. I'm just genuinely impressed by the amount of gear that Insomniac is shipping to remote countries.
Here is an overview of the grounds:

I even got to meet Geoff, the lucky guy who gets to play with the LED and fire toys (although I'm sure it was a shitload of work to setup):

  • Kinetic Fields looked very nice once the sun had set:

  • Stereo Bloom:

  • Circuit Grounds:

  • Bionic Jungle:

  • Downtown EDC was cool:

    They brought Kandi Casino!

    Karaoke battle!

Plenty of food options, but they did not accept real money sadly

But now let's talk about the fake money BS. Yes, it's apparently the custom to screw people over in Thailand with this, but still.... You had to buy $30 at a time, 3% surcharge for credit cards, and of course non refundable. Why???? This is so petty and literally undid so many great things that this EDC did:

sorry, but this is bullshit. On top of that, they couldn't even process credit cards on phones

at least they are telling you how they are screwing you, minimum $30 top up and no refund
at least they are telling you how they are screwing you, minimum $30 top up and no refund

Compared to EDCKR, Insomniac did the right thing and put water stations (thank you), although they were single access (not 10 or 20 in parallel like EDCLV). Still, at least they had some:

Back to the venue, this EDC felt the most like Vegas with its streets of lights and pixel forest:

(so, I have around 300 displays on my LED outfit, some are meant to be silly and jokes, and when I saw Pasqualle Rotella walk by, I couldn't help asking him for a picture, which he very nicely agreed to do, and I didn't look at what display came on at the same time the picture was taken, and ended up with this one, ooops :) ).

Now let's look at the festival days:

    EDC Day 1

Of course the highlight of Day 1 was Tiesto who played a lovely trance set:

If you stayed until the end, getting back anywhere was a mess, the 2 lane road was gridlocked with cars, scooters that couldn't moved and pedestrians everywhere jut walking back. I did the 20-25mn walk back to the hotel and got back before most people got clear raod to wherever they were actually going. If anyone took shuttles, let me know if somehow they had a magic special route or if they were stuck in the same mess (I think they were):

Just like Day 1, Day 2 was not fun during the day, the few people who came were hiding in the shade:

The fireworks and drone show were really good. Insomniac did not go cheap:

    Drone show:

    Ending fireworks:

For day 3, I left a bit earlier through a side excit another right and walked to the first scooter I could find and gave them cash for a ride back (only a few minutes when the road isn't blocked):

technically illegal to have 3 people per scooter, but everyone did it
technically illegal to have 3 people per scooter, but everyone did it

    Video Summary of Day 3:

    Thought/Impressions/Suggestions/Conclusion

    In somewhat random order:

  • Pricing, like everything in Thailand, was more than reasonable. Hotels nearby were not cheap ($200-ish+), but if you went further away, they were fine. Ironically, with everything being so expensive in Vegas, including local 1H flights to and from Vegas costing sometimes as much or more as a cheap fare to Asia, EDC Thailand ends up being cheaper than EDC Vegas, even if you live in the US West Coast.
  • Also Thailand is friendly and welcoming, Vegas has become pretty hostile to tourists and happy to price gouge them now (and yes, that includes the ridiculous high resort fees).
  • The midnight curfew was probably the least ideal part. Given that I could hear EDC from the hotel a mile away, it's understandable that they didn't have a license to keep everyone awake within a large radius until 02:00 or later, but that also meant only 5.5h of night per day, and before sunset at 18:30, the weather was pretty unbearably hot and humid if you aren't in short, tshirt and slippers (i.e. idiots like me wearing full pants, and shirt with long sleeves, haha).
  • I mentioned midnight is a bit early to end the fun. There was an official after party in Patong Beach at Illuzion Phuket, but that was over an hour away (or more in bad traffic), the venue warned they had very few lockers and they had pretty strict security, making it unlikely that I'd get in with my LED gear. I did even contact them on IG and Whatsapp beforehand and they never replied. Long story short, I don't think it was a suitable after party venue given the distance and limited size. For reference, it took up to 1h to simply get out of EDC at midnight from the standstill traffic to a proper road going somewhere, then maybe 1h to arrive at Illuzion (now 02:00) and the after party ended at 03:00. Obviously totally not worth it to drive up to 3h for spending only 1h there before it closed. Ideally EDC would have some indoor venue close to the actual venue where they could continue to make noise past midnight without keeping all the neighbors awake.
  • VIP had nice viewing platforms and chill areas plus gifts, felt nice
  • Security was a bit on the rough (thorough) side
  • Water stations were great, but having a few more will help with the long lines
  • Food options were good, but useless to me if they force you to buy fake non refundable money in units of $30. That was the most disappointing for this edition, surprising that Insomniac let that happen when EDC Korea and EDC Vegas don't have this problem. This left such a bad taste in my mouth for an event that was otherwise all joy and happiness.
  • Having both Tiesto play trance and Armin play mostly trance was great of course, especially with the impressive drone show and fireworks that went with it, but otherwise these 3 days of EDC has less trance than the 2nd day of EDC Korea. That said, I still found enough other music I could enjoy, so that was not a huge deal. It just wasn't a top dreamstate destination.
  • This EDC felt big without being too big (the walk from circuit grounds to kinetic fields was painful but not as bad as EDC Vegas). After 18:30 when the sun started to set, it got quite busy, but too bad there was only 5:30 worth of festival at that time.
Outside of not being close to being "dusk to dawn", this felt close to a regular EDC Vegas, very much worth going to.

Thanks to everyone who made the event happen!

Just like last years, delighted to be back: Dreamstate Socal is still an event I look forward to, all year.

This is our third year at Queen Mary, you can read the first QM report for Queen Mary vs NOS where DS used to be before that. It is true that I still prefer NOS for a variety of technical reasons (from later curfew, shorter distances between stages, no bridge or underpass tunnel, megastructures that allow more kick ass lasers, and a few more...), but honestly DS like it is run, is still going to be (and was) lots of fun, regardless of where it's run. For the record, it's already been confirmed to be at Queen Mary for next year, so we can put that discussion to rest :)

The Insomniac team still made those magical places:

    the ring!
    the ring!

Of course, the water is always nice:

And then, there is the boat, it does look quite pretty from the outside. Unfortunately inside, especially behind the scenes, is literally falling apart. I didn't want to break the magic with pictures there, but honestly it's not looking great.

Generally, my thought this year on the venue:

  • the layout and footprint looked almost identical to last year
  • thankfully we mostly avoided the rain this year, but it's still 3 years in a row with rain and mud
  • It looked full with some choke points with this year's crowds, it wasn't unbearable, but I'd say it was close to the limit
  • Void was still felt too far even if it's half a perception issue, to the point that I only really went twice, too far for stage hopping.
  • Sequence was lovely but it felt like a 15mn walk from dream, it's really far end to end. NOS felt more compact while offering bigger and better stages. Not being able to reasonably stage hop between sequence and dream was unfortunate. This did benefit Vision though as it was in the middle :)
  • barely any lasers at dream, maybe a safety/logistical issue with the location, but disappointing for sets, especially Gareth. What is Gareth without real lasers? :)
  • but apart from limited lasers, the dream stage was beautiful

  • Weather

It was reasonably cold this year, but thankfully we barely avoided the rain this year. Obviously this location is much more subject to and affected by rain than NOS. It did rain a good amount just before the event, which sucked for the setup crews, but thankfully attendees were spared. They did a good job getting rid of most of the muddy mess with a better floor they installed:

People say a little rain has never killed anyone, and it does make the lasers look nice (that part is true), but they also forget how the first year at QM, we had a deluge of rain during the boat party that would have simply cancelled the event had it been a few hours earlier. That also made for a muddy mess the next day. So yeah, this honestly makes me nervous every year compared to San Bernardino that is a lot more dry, but I guess for now we just need to keep hoping to remain lucky :) (DS has already been confirmed to remain at QM next year).

The Queen Mary Boat After Parties

The boat had 3 rooms this year again, I think they may have been moved so that 2 of them were on the top floor which was convenient for stage hopping, but they were also the farthest you could be from bathrooms that were all the way down outside the boat, with no working elevator. It was a serious amount of steps to go up and down, and sadly the one working elevator was guarded by someone who made sure no one would get on it without an ADA wristband, and let's be honest, I didn't see many people with ADA wristbands on the boat, it was not ADA friendly in my opinion. So I was not impressed with that person denying the elevator to someone whose legs/knees were hurting but didn't have the ADA wristband. Her answer was to go down a lot of stairs and back up to somewhere not close to try and get an ADA wristband in the middle of the night :-/
I know (from having seen it) that parts of that boat are falling apart, the internal elevators are non functioning and virtually all bathrooms were non functioning too, which is why they were closed. This cruiseship is on its last legs indeed. The corridors with cabins were ok enough, as long as you were not hoping to sleep before 06:00, because the bass was shaking everything (unless you're a burning man veteran that can sleep next to speakers :) ).

We also organized and took some Trancefamily pictures:

Anyway, let's go through the 2 days of festival:

    Day 1

Last year, DS started surprisingly early, 13:00, which was announced late and definitely a surprise. This year it went back to 16:00. I'm fine with anything (even if I want 3 days, haha), but hope the start time gets announced as early as possible so that people can get the right flights (both last year and this year, I had to do a difficult last minute plane change after an unexpected start time was announced).

I did start at Sequence to see Kristina Sky

Of course 01:00 was not the real end, next was the boat party. The lineup was great again, but I had a hard time enjoying the cramped and hot rooms (they did add fans, but it was still not very comfortable):

Many stages, many DJs, let's skip to the end, Dream got packed at the end when many went there to see Tiesto:

    So, what happened? ;)
Honestly I just wanted to be happy, and it's just been 20 years since I got to see Tiesto play trance at Tiesto in Concert in LA:

Yes, I was there in 2005

and I was wearing it for Tiesto's set this DS :)
and I was wearing it for Tiesto's set this DS :)

And yes, I saw him before that even, this was 2004 in New York:

Some people didn't like the first 15 minutes, I did. Some didn't like the rest which was more old school trance he used to play, because it was "the same thing" or "nothing new". I was "Hell, Tiesto is playing real trance, at Dreamstate! Can't we be very happy about that?" ... I was :)

    Here's the full set:

So there you go, I had a great time, I was happy! :) But seriously if you're not happy enough with Tiesto, I was not happy with him leaving us for close to 20 years for commercial stuff that I sure don't care for. If he comes back, we have to welcome him back and the people he will bring to trance with him, that's a good thing!

The rest of the night was spent on the boat to finish the fun until we were exhausted:

    Day 2 Summary Video:

Aftermath and Conclusion: Should this not be 3 days and with a bit more sleep?

Yes, I'm lazy, I kept the same headline as last year, but it's still fitting :)

    DJS and music:

  • they were somewhat different from previous years, while keeping some favorites, not a bad thing
  • Some DJs were not able to come because the US has made it fairly expensive for them to get work visas and they can apparently take more than 6 months to be done unless you pay another "go faster" fee on top which is a few thousand dollars more. Sad :-//
  • And yet, great to see some new DJs like Roman Messer or Asteroid, both I knew from Europe but not everyone gets to go there.
  • Speaking of visas, I don't even want to know how much it cost to get all of superstrings :)
  • Queen Mary looks pretty from the outside, but inside:

  • It's hot as hell, to the point I had to remove my entire outfit to remove layers. They added a few fans, but still uncomfortably hot and humid.
  • The 3 stages were 4 very tall floors apart with only a single working elevator (the other ones have been broken for a long time and are part of the ship that is falling apart). I already explained above that having staff denying use of the one working elevator that was pretty much unused to people who could really have benefited from it, was poor.
  • The rooms on top of being too hot and cramped, were not big enough for everyone: on the 2nd day at 04;00, you couldn't get in Grand ballroom without waiting in line long enough for people to get out :-//
  • I mentioned the boat falling apart behind the scenes: if you get to see behind the curtain (I did), there are so many things that are very broken and left unfixed, we're talking broken walls, barely safe stuff. It's not meant to be guest facing, but not inspiring. So I guess my advice is don't look behind the curtain :)
  • Last year, DS started surprisingly early, 13:00, which was announced late and definitely a surprise. This year it went back to 16:00. I'm fine with anything (even if I want 3 days, haha), but hope the start time gets announced as early as possible so that people can get the right flights (both last year and this year, I had to do a difficult last minute plane change after an unexpected start time was announced).

From last year, it was similar:

  • still two days but enough DJs for 3 days, easily.
  • art was was still 5th stage and passport had its secret 6th stage.
  • Even moving back the start time from 13:00 to 16:00, it was still a lot of hours, although I'd have preferred more of them outside the boat.
  • And for anyone asking, Jeff Ryan from Insomniac has confirmed that DS will be at Queen Mary again next year, so he's saving us the time to talk about NOS vs QM :)

Should you go? Would I go Back?

I think I don't need to write a long essay to say "hell yes"
  • It's still the best night trance festival in the world production wise
  • Yes, too many DJs all at once in not enough hours, but well, better than the opposite problem :)
  • Where else do you get all those lovely costumes and nicely decorated LED totems? (for the flags in the smack middle of the crowd, blocking the view, maybe we can do without those, though :) ).
  • The insomniac crew continues to run a well oiled machine and did a great job this year again.
  • As parting words,
