30 years!
30 years!

Before EDC started, you can read up on these two:

  • EDC 30 Year Anniversary on the Vegas Strip, Awesome But Too Short (readme)

  • EDC Vegas Virgin Hotel and Dreamstate Pool Party (readme)

  • EDC's Success, after 30 years, switching to 2 weekends, but better than Tomorrowland

EDC has been selling out more quickly every year, as I write this after the event is barely over, EDC Las Vegas expanded to two weeks next year, and both are almost sold out already. That's a great and impressive success and I like that Insomniac did this better than Tomorrowland in that both weekends will have the same artists (baring last minute emergencies obviously), which is a huge huge plus compared to Tomorrowland where you have no idea who you will see on the week you are pseudo randomly picking.
Something else that I find maddening with Tomorrowland is how difficult it is to get a ticket, even if you agree to massively overpay by getting a global entry package. I'm not going to say that the buying process was perfectly smooth for the 2 weekend format for next year, the queuing system for one was definitely broken and gave you 0 info on where you were in queue or if you were still in queue, but Insomniac did one thing better in my opinion, which was the price tiers: the later you ended up out of that somewhat random queue, the higher the price, went. Of course some people complained it was a money grab, but on the other side, I would rather have a ticket at a higher price if I want to go badly enough (EDC), than not even being able to go at all (tomorrowland).
Interestingly, Insomniac also made the right call that die hards might want to go to both weekends, which was correct. They nicely priced it so that buying both was a bit cheaper than buying both separately (at least for GA/GA+, VIP was about the same price), which sure made things easier once you got to the top of the waiting queue. I think it was a charitable idea, but it also created the problem of people potentially buying both weekends with the goal of reselling one. That is against the rules, but it may be tricky to enforce without making the experience worse for everyone. My guess is that next time, buying both weekends may not offer a discount, which honestly would be fine by me, especially when you consider that people going both weekends are taking a spot away from people trying to get one (weekend 2 fully sold out within 3 days or so).

Just like last year, Quantum Valley has a mix of trance, and other things. I'd say it was still more than 50% trance, and let's not forget both Above and Beyond and Armin played a sunrise set at Kinetic Fields, and Tiesto also played a good mix, so trance is definitely not dead ;) (of course, EDC has always had many kinds of EDM, and a good way to sample other kinds you don't normally listen to). Oh, and like every year, the stages are quite impressive, including Quantum Valley that had eyes that sent beams into the crowd.

    The People

Like every year, it's so enjoyable to meet our fellow EDM lovers:

Like every year, many picture opportunities, including lovely unexpected surprises you get along the way. I had no idea that Haliene was going to be there to sing live with Ilan Bluestone, and I wan't ready with a picture of both of them, so we had to take 2 ;)

    The Grounds:

It is always a highlight every year, here are a few pictures.

Took the Virgin shuttle this year:

Despite the typical terrible traffic on friday, managed to barely get there before sunset:

Plenty of nice decor as always:

Great pictures from the Ferris Wheel as always:

As for the stages, beautiful like every year:

    Passport

Went to visit passport, great views as always, but missing hot chocolate with marshmallows and sprinkles :)

sign in was very slow due to poor connectivity, even for the staff

    great central views

    Drones

The drone shows have become a bit better every year:

    Fireworks

Great view from passport of course:

And farther way from the bleachers, is not a bad view either ;)

    Day #1

Day1, let's go! good trance lineup at Quantum Valley:

And then above and beyond at Kinetic Fields for a lovely sunrise set:

    Video Summary:

    Day 2 Fireworks:

    Day #3, High Wind Day

Day 3 had very high winds forecast, and they sure happened. Some people who didn't leave early, got stuck on the roads when they closed down for very high winds. Some shuttle stops had delays when their fences literally got blown off by the wind, but people got there eventually. Miraculously the fireworks and drone shows still happened later in the night. I also have to give credit to all the insomniac teams for being ready, and some stages did have to shut down for a while, but everything was handled well and stages re-opened eventually.

Started with Circuit Grounds before the high winds had to shut it down:

we were asked to evacuate, likely because the wind came from that direction and things could fly in the crowds

A few other states like wasteland kept on going:

the wind was fierce but music kept on going

The night ended with Armin's sunrise set:

and once the 3rd night was over, it was time to get back to Vegas to catch the flight out:

    Video Summary:

    Day 3 Fireworks:

    Should you go?

I think the fact that the event got extended to two weekends, one is sold out already, and the other one probably not far from it, shows that EDC is special and worth it. My notes from last year mentioned that it felt crowded last year and I'll be honest that it was also true for this year. At times, getting around was quite challenging, and having a 30 to 50mn wait at VIP just to get a lanyard and a couple of souvenirs, felt problematic, at best. Obviously Insomniac knows this, which is why they already fixed that by splitting and hopefully the crowds, over 2 weekends next year.

At this point, note that the text below is mostly the same as last years, since it's still valid :)

I still believe that EDC Vegas is the most impressive EDM Night Festival in the world. Tomorrowland is a rival but it's not a night festival as more challenges I'm not as much a fan of.

    Like previous times:

  • Decors are just fantastic, along with so many performers. That's the best part about EDC. Even better now that I know and recognize some of the performers
  • Like other insomniac festivals, all the staff truly cares and goes all out. Many small details that get sometimes missed elsewhere, are usually flawless. I'll even add that actually they are the most detail oriented, over achieving people I have seen. The amount of small details I absolutely do notice, how every corner of the racetrack is used for decors, the amount of light strings and LEDs, across ridiculous distances, and it just works all night, every night (nothing seems to ever break)!?!? I have no words. And seriously, if you know anything about LED strings and wind and moving them, you should know how amazing it is that they don't break!
  • This year again, security was more than reasonable as usual, thank you. Enough police onsite to help keep things safe, I personally like that.
  • 19:00 to 05:30 is 10:30h of partying for 3 days, lots of fun! Actually first day does start at 17:00 (Cosmic Meadows only), and the next 2 days that used to start at 17:00 do not anymore, but I'm sure that for those at Camp EDC, there are plenty of parties there. The one sad thing is that shuttles start 30mn later (18:30), so it's near impossible to get to EDC by 19:00 and see the first DJ anymore, especially with traffic, and even more so on friday when traffic is positively terrible every year, even if you leave early.
  • So many free carnival rides, lots of fun, but the lines were too long for most, wasn't able to justify spending the time in line to enjoy them.
  • Still so many stages (around 15 if you include art cars, and passport)
  • Is it still worth flying across the world for? Yes, absolutely, there is nothing else like this on earth. Then again, maybe I should tell you not to come anymore, as it's getting full and sold out in just 3 days this year.
  • Conclusion/Other thoughts

    Improvements

  • Shuttles should leave earlier, 18:30 is too late, honestly the first shuttles should leave closer to 17:30 if people want to have a chance to see the first DJs at 19:00.
  • Cell phone service outside of verizon was just as non existent as previous years, which felt disappointing, and is honestly a problem when you're trying to coordinate with friends (not even basic cell service without data for SMS to work).
  • Similarly some areas had wifi, but it was terribly overwhelmed and worked occasionally, at best. Even passport wifi wasn't working when I went. Come on, insomniac, you have some of the best tech crews in the world, I'm sure you can make at least wifi work, and bring basic SMS for all carriers. Not counting verizon, it literally works better at burning man:

  • Something else I have mixed feelings about, is allowing nicotine vendors to advertise on site, and literally have a "first one is free" where they very clearly looking to create more addicts for a product that hopefully most agree has between very few, if any benefits long term. Please let me know in the comments how you feel about it;

  • Passport still has a great vantage point, but felt like a bit of a downgrade from some past year. Their wifi didn't work either, and the hot chocolate with marshmallows and chocolate sprinkles that can't cost that much, was sorely missed. The view was still spectacular, though.
  • Still Not fixed this year: please give exact GPS pin locations for the projected shuttle stops. Sometimes they are 1 mile away from the fake address given and it really makes a difference when picking hotels. Even if this cannot be given many months in advance, at least send the actual shuttle location (GPS pin) to all people who bought shuttle passes, as soon as possible.
  • Links

And yet, I'll repeat: thank you to everyone at the insomniac team, all the performers, all the volunteers who put so much effort into making so many details right all over the place (except wifi, haha), with the great result that we all got to enjoy...

Just 2 years ago, Rong had a pretty stellar lineup for Malta. It is only 3 days away from EDC Vegas, so it's kind of difficult to do both, and last year it just wasn't possible, but I gave it a shot again this year :)

    Madwave!
    Madwave!

5th time in Malta for Trance, is it time that I move there to save on airfare? :)
5th time in Malta for Trance, is it time that I move there to save on airfare? :)

This year again, it was a packed lineup:

Thursday, Uno, Malta With Bonus Rain

Day #1 when I had just gotten off the plane, was slightly confusing as it didn't say where to go, but thankfully people on the FB group confirmed the room names were at Uno, where most of the festival took place. While Uno features a multi-stage layout similar to Gianpula Village, it felt a bit smaller this year, probably due to Rong's success and the number of tickets sold (it was either sold out, or very close to it). That's of course great news for the festival, I just hope Uno will spread the load a bit better with their available space, as it often felt somewhat cramped, or a bigger venue like Gianpula will be chosen.
My memory of the Uno security folks was that they were very chill and welcoming, but this year was a bit less so. Obviously I bring in more unusual things than the average person, but they were not super ok with it this year and woudln't let me in, until a lovely Rong person came to the rescue and told them things were ok (thank you!). After that, they let me in and were cool the remaining days.

Once in, the party started in the treehaus room, until later when roots/classics got opened:

Treehaus had lots of back to back sets. By then, I didn't have the schedule with timeslots (only A-Z with no idea who was playing when), so half the time I didn't know who was playing, and the rest it was DJs I could recognize.

so lovely to see Edele Andaya again
so lovely to see Edele Andaya again

    as well as Maria Healy
    as well as Maria Healy

Then, against all odds, it actually rained halfway through the night (not in the forecast), not an extreme amount, but enough to get wet and enough rain for me to go hide since my LED stuff of course doesn't love water. It did get weird when Uno staff somehow decided to literally trap people who were in the non covered half (classics) and didn't allow people out except a few at a time when they felt it was somehow ok :-(

Friday, Boat Party + Back at Uno

The day started with a boat party, which I didn't join this time around as I've already done it 3 different times, and didn't feel like doing it again (the view is good, but I've seen it, and the actual space on the boat and music/dancing quality isn't that great). This was nothing wrong with Rong, simply that I've done enough Malta boat parties by now, they are pretty much all the same.

So, here are the pictures from Uno after the boat party was over:

    Saturday, Crowded Café del Mar

Back at cafe del mar, of energy 52 fame :) It's a great place to lounge and watch the sunset, but honestly it's pretty poor for the amount of crowd and being able to see the stage and DJ playing. Somehow they didn't want to open any of the shade umbrellas this year again, but they had a nice pool if you partake in that, and I'll also admit their restaurant is very good and reasonably priced.

the view does not suck ;)
the view does not suck ;)

    but it got crowded, quickly
    but it got crowded, quickly

unfortunately, not a real sunset that day due to clouds
unfortunately, not a real sunset that day due to clouds

    Great to see Genix, again:

And Seb Fontaine, whom I had never seen in person:

Honestly I had a good time at Café del Mar last time, but this time there ere too many people (Rong is victim of its success), and personal thing for me: there was pretty much 0 shade the whole day, which is a big deal for people who medically need to avoid extended sun exposure. You could go hide in the restaurant, but only so much as the sun would even get inside the restaurant depending on the hours. I realize not everyone cares but "more shade please".

Once the sun set, it was a lot more fun for me, but there was very heavy wind the whole day, which may have cancelled and rescheduled fireworks to the next day, but the lineup was fire. The only downside was how crowded it was, Cdm is simply not that big, and the layout is very wide, so most of the people on the side could not see which DJ was playing. On the plus side, the repeater speakers worked well enough

    Sunday, Turtuga Malta/Little Armier Beach

Sunday started at a far away beach, Armier Beach, abot 45 to 60mn away for many at the end of a dicey barely two late road. I was a bit worried to end up in some remote empty beach, but sure enough Rong installed a nice stage on the beach, but again, hot sun with no shade at all, which was unfortunate downside for me. That said, I also believe it was the first year for that stage, so things already worked quite well considering, and hopefully some shade will be on the menu in future years :)

this was way way better than Cafe de mar, big stage that everyone could see
this was way way better than Cafe de mar, big stage that everyone could see

But as the prior picture, as I said, it was far and few people made it early, I think people started arriving by 15:00 or so.

I arrived in time for my friend Bogdan Vix, of Romania Untold fame:

    Mauro Picotto
    Mauro Picotto

I left soon after Mauro started as I couldn't get into that music, had had enough hiding from the sun, and getting back to my room and Uno was around 1H on the road, not counting my having to pack my luggage to be ready to run out right after Uno for a 05:55 flight home monday morning (i.e. that same night). Sadly I didn't know that fireworks would be shot after the sun set, so I missed those.

    Sunday, Uno

Last night, last party, two rooms at Uno, lots of big names, packed lineup for sure. I definitely wanted to be in both rooms for multiple slots:

    Craig!
    Craig!

Stage hopping all night as both had great music
Stage hopping all night as both had great music

And then Fadi came to deliver another wonderful set, which I should have recorded. There is so much love in his music, and many of the tracks he played were epic, including closing with "we control the sunlight vs Napoleon" which it turns out he had already played at his EDC Las Vegas Sunrise Set in 2016. Such a wonderful mashup!

as always, he graciously took a few pictures before leaving

    And Giusseppe!
    And Giusseppe!

    But the party goes on:

    Ruben de Ronde

    and Maddix ended mainstage
    and Maddix ended mainstage

Unfortunately, some not so good thing happened at Uno that I won't go into here, so I had to leave early and missed most of Maddix, but thankfully I see him several times a year, including at home in San Francisco where he came recently

    Conclusions/Thoughts

First, like any trance festival that actually has trance and in the case of Rong, top DJs that must cost money, Rong did a great job and that matters. For the rest, I'll give random thoughts below:

  • Lineup, lineup, lineup: if you care about big name DJs, Rong wins for sure. The lineup was stacked and clearly had to cost a pretty penny (hence Rong also costing more, which is understandable and fair)
  • Lineup order: I am not a professional at this (and by that I mean I'm sure some artists refuse to play early slots or sometimes refuse to play before or after another artist, not counting flight times and other such restrictions making scheduling complicated), but I think some ordering tweaks could have been done, like putting Cosmic Gate before Craig Connelly and have Aly and Fila right after Craig. Both Craig and Fadi were high energy trance, while Cosmic Gate was not, so it broke the flow for me a bit. Similarly, Mauro Picotto that was pretty heavy techno, I would have put after Billy Giles who is more of a mix of trance and techno. Unfortunately I had a hard time enjoy Mauro (too hard for me) and left to change and get ready for Uno (which was far away), and missed Billy as well as unannounced fireworks.
  • Speaking of announcements, last minute communication felt lacking, few people had the magic schedule with set times which wasn't posted on the FB group and I saw multiple people carrying a schedule with incorrect set times and wondering what happened. It would be helpful to have an announce group with last minute updates, schedule changes, info on fireworks if they are to happen, or got moved due to high winds, something like: last minute update posts on the facebook group, or a whatsapp group, or twitter, or Emails with last minute pushes/updates
  • this is better than
    this is better than

    than this
    than this

  • Crowding: I felt like Rong was a bit victim of its success. I think it either sold out or got close to selling out (VIP was sold out very early as VIP space, like the rest, was limited). I felt that all nights were packed to capacity, and it was often hard to get around.
  • VIP at Uno had a nice platform on the side, but it wasn't that big and the view was very much sideways. There was a much better elevated central space int the back, but it looked like some skydeck area with virtually no one in there, shame. VIP at Café del Mar was very much on the side, you simply couldn't see the stage from there. And no VIP at Tortuga. For VIP ticket holders reading this, please tell me if I'm missing anything on other VIP perks
  • I read and heard multiple complaints about drinks/alcohol at Uno. I don't drink alcohol so I can't say, but I heard things about weird taste, people wondering what actually was in their drink, and a few saying they were overcharged/double charged (can't say if it was an honest mistake for just 2 people or more widespread).
  • But, but, but, Rong got rid of the mandated wristband money, which was a huge win. Now you could pay with normal credit cards/tap by phone and not worry about an alternate fake money system and all the issues that come with it. I think Lumi and Rong are actually the only festivals I know who came back to regular money (not counting the ones that never used it like all Insomniac Festivals in the US and many many more who know that tap to pay works for virtually everyone). So, seriously, thank you Rong!
  • I realize that each festival promoting company has deals with certain clubs, but I had something else fairly unfortunate happen at Uno from their sheer negligence, which they handled very poorly. Without giving details, and given the crowding of the existing rooms, I'm not a huge fan anymore. There are many clubs in Malta (and I do mean many), maybe Rong will consider other ones? (and yes, I'm sure things were fine as is for others, as always I only share my personal experience and opinion, not a universal truth ;) ).
  • Tortuga Malta/Little Armier Beach was actually a great stage, putting the lack of shade aside, but it was pretty far. The first few hours were mostly empty as people took a while to get there. Opening DJs for the first 3 hours only played for a few dozen people.
  • Sun and shade: for those who wonder, I've unfortunately had around 10 skin cancers surgically removed in the last many years. Yes, sunscreen, but it can stop working before you know, or you can miss a spot. Don't laugh I had one cancer on an eyelid where I must have not put sunscreen so it didn't get in my eyes (that stings for a long time), and one behind the ear. But enough about me, it would be wonderful to have shade at each venue for day festivals.
  • Security was more tough/rough than the first year I went. They were not lumi or creamfields terrible, which is another level of bad, but it didn't feel that friendly anymore. On the plus side, it was mostly the same folks, and after they knew me, they were a bit more chill. I do remember that in the past security was local Maltese who are known for their friendliness and being welcoming while still doing their job, but this year it looked like security was contracted out to an external company that just didn't feel the same. As it happens, I wrote this from Euphoria Malta, 2.5 weeks later, and Security at all other clubs, including Gianpula, was much nicer and more chill than Uno.
  • Uber and Bolt were plentiful in Malta, but I still left a little bit early every night per fear of not getting any if I stayed until the end. I'm not sure there were busses for people who bought the full package. Please let me know if you know and I'll update this page.
  • Out of the 3 Malta Trance festivals (along with Euphoria Weekender and Captured), Rong still win with the best lineup as far as big name artists are concerned. I can't name them all as there were many, but Fadi (Aly and Fila) played another set that made me completely melt, Craig Connelly played another banger set, that should have been followed by Fadi, Ferry Corsten of course, and John 00 Fleming (mis-spelled in the official schedule). There were many more and I can't list them all. Ooooh, and let's not forget Daxson's first return to the decks after his surgery, that was also fantastic.
  • All in all, comments I saw at times that it was the "wrong" festival, putting aside the funny play on words, it delivers on a packed lineup, and that cannot be denied. I do feel like it outgrew some of the venues somewhat (too small for the crowd), and set times can be communicated a bit better, but otherwise I'd still say it's a solid festival for what it delivers and I have to give thanks and gratitude for the hospitality this year again and being able to see great DJs and friends again, as well as make new ones:

Fun thing, I was re-reading my Beyond Wonderland Scoal 2024 report and it looked quite similar, but that's a good thing because I wrote then that it was the best one yet, so that makes this one still "the best one yet" :) I would also mention that outside of the part that it ends way earlier (02:00 instead of 05:30), you can compare BW to a smaller EDC with better decors and a wonderful fun theme

One change this year is cell phone service did not improve. I technically had signal, but the cell towers weren't really passing any data. However, they added a lot more wifi, which I must say worked actually quite well (especially compared to some prior festivals where it failed pretty badly):

After the event ended at 02:00, went to the after party (onsite), which was better than being stuck in traffic or wait hours for an uber, but it was kind of basic EDM, so I got bored after about 30mn. Still, it was nice to have this for those who wanted to continue to party:

    Thoughts/Conclusions

  • As I wrote above, working Wifi, 3 different networks no less, was a good addition
  • Which is good because cell didn't work well
  • Great decors again
  • The one thing I didn't love was how offset the VIP viewing areas were from the stages center, especially Chesire Woods
  • It felt to me that there were plenty of drink vendors, but not even food vendors. The food lines were way long.
  • Like past years, The many theme appropriate performers were still there, maybe more even, and it really added to the event.
  • I'll repeat other insomniac festivals, like EDC and Dreamstate, all the staff truly cares and goes all out. Many small details that get sometimes missed elsewhere, are usually flawless
  • 15:00 to 02:00 plus an afterparty until 06:00. That's more than you can do :)
  • 8 stages, definitely a lot...
  • Now, I do have to state that trance content was low and lower than before. It's not a trance festival of course, and that follows the general general trends, so trance on Day2 was more to be seen as a bonus.
  • My general verdict is still the same: it's a beautiful festival, I'd say more beautiful than EDC even if smaller, and definitely worth going to, a second only to EDC.
  • 'Till next time:
